Sam is a boy’s boy. Tough as nails and completely fearless. He leads the other boys in the neighborhood and teases the girls relentlessly. A rompin’ stompin’ bundle of energy. He drives his tutors at our Help and Hope Center to distraction one minute then charms his way out of trouble the next.
But his personality is the product of hardship. His mother abandoned him as an infant. His father is a FARC guerilla who Sam has seen three times in his life, the latest visit three years ago. Raised by a physically abusive grandparent it’s a wonder that Sam can smile at all.
Sam has plans and dreams. He wants to be a police officer. A detective. But in Colombia you cannot be a police officer if a parent has spent time in jail and his dad has been behind bars three times. So, he moves on to another dream.
One bright spot in Sam’s life is the Help and Hope Center in his community. He loves his tutors and is there constantly, even when there is no homework to be done. And the tutors and pastor love him back.
Help us help more kids like Sam.
